"Streets of Mettle" is a solo project creating a project based of retro games, using retro mechanics and aesthetics.
You play as a fighter trying to free a city from violent gangs. The game plays out as a 2.5D sidescroller. The player must punch and shoot their way to the end of three levels against a variety of increasingly difficult enemies.

CONCEPT

It’d always been my instinct to try and make modern & graphically impressive games (in a traditional sense) using Unreal Engine, but this time I wanted to try something a little different. I asked a basic question – what if I took Streets of Rage and mixed it with Metal Slug.
Truthfully, I’d never played either of those before I started working on this project. I’d played a rip off version of Metal Slug on Miniclip games called “Commando” which I enjoyed as a kid, but that was about it. I bought both and played through them while I was making this project.

I don’t claim to be as fun as either of my inspirations, but I LOVED the perspective and 2.5D styling of streets of rage, and think I’d adapted it to the shooting mechanics of Metal Slug quite well.

REFLECT
To critique my game, I couldn’t get the pace of metal slug right. A lot of that I think comes down to animations. I drew these sprites myself, which was fun and let me express my ideas, despite not being core to the goal of the module.
